Case Study: Supporting Nutritional Health During GLP-1 Weight Loss

Female, 40s | Significant weight loss | Nutritional support and muscle preservation

The challenge

A woman in her 40s approached Mineral State after losing over six stone while taking GLP-1 weight-loss medication.

Although her weight loss had been successful, she recognised that eating considerably less could have consequences for her long-term nutritional health.

She had always had a reasonably healthy diet, regularly cooking meals from scratch. However, a demanding job, considerable family stress and limited opportunities for exercise had made looking after herself increasingly difficult.

Following her weight loss, she was particularly concerned about:

  • Getting sufficient vitamins, minerals and protein despite her reduced appetite.
  • Hair loss, which had become a noticeable issue.
  • Low muscle mass and concerns about bone health.
  • Supporting her digestion and gallbladder health.
  • Maintaining her weight loss as she gradually reduced her medication under medical supervision.

What did her hair mineral analysis show?

We carried out a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) to explore her mineral profile alongside her diet, symptoms and health history.

The report identified several findings worth reviewing, including:

  • Low hair sodium and potassium.
  • A low sodium-to-magnesium ratio.
  • Low manganese and molybdenum.
  • Low iodine.
  • Elevated copper and zinc.
  • A calcium-to-potassium ratio above the laboratory’s preferred range.

These findings provided additional information to consider when reviewing her nutritional intake. Hair mineral analysis does not, on its own, diagnose nutritional deficiencies or adrenal or thyroid dysfunction, so results were considered alongside her wider clinical picture.

Our approach

Rather than putting her on a restrictive diet, our focus was on helping her get more nutritional value from the food she was already eating.

We developed a personalised programme incorporating:

Nutrient-dense meals: Improving her morning protein smoothie with berries, greens and seeds, alongside maintaining good-quality protein and varied plant foods.

Regular nourishment: Reducing long gaps between meals, including introducing a small afternoon snack to support adequate intake and more regular eating.

Targeted nutritional supplements: Reviewing her existing supplements and developing a simplified programme to support nutritional adequacy during reduced food intake.

Muscle and bone health: Encouraging progressive resistance training to help preserve and rebuild strength following significant weight loss.

Stress and recovery: Finding realistic opportunities for movement, outdoor time and rest within an extremely busy working and family life.

Progress so far

She has now reduced her GLP-1 medication dose with her prescriber and reports that her appetite is returning to a more comfortable, normal level.

She has also reported early improvements in symptoms, including her hair loss.

Her weight and metabolic health readings remain encouraging, and we are now concentrating on muscle strength, nutritional adequacy and sustainable routines rather than further weight loss.

Her programme is ongoing, and these early improvements cannot be attributed to any single intervention.

The takeaway

Weight loss and nutritional health are not necessarily the same thing.

GLP-1 medications can be extremely effective for weight management, but a substantially reduced appetite can make it more difficult to consume enough protein and essential nutrients.

This case demonstrates why nutritional support, attention to muscle and bone health, and realistic lifestyle changes can be valuable alongside medical weight-loss treatment.

At Mineral State, we use hair mineral analysis as one part of a broader nutritional assessment, helping to guide personalised conversations about food, lifestyle and appropriate follow-up testing.
